If you are a Mumbai parent, you know the feeling. Sunday morning, four kids buzzing with energy, and you are already calculating how many more weekends you can survive inside a flat before someone loses their mind. (That someone is usually me.) The good news is that Mumbai sits at the absolute centre of some of Maharashtra’s most beautiful escapes, and most of them are under three hours away. No long flight, no elaborate packing, no “are we there yet” past lunchtime.

I have done several of these trips with my own crew, and this is my honest list of weekend getaways near Mumbai that genuinely work with kids in tow. Not just pretty on paper. Actually doable.
Lonavala: The Classic That Still Delivers
Lonavala earns its reputation every monsoon and for good reason. At around 85 km from the city, it is one of the most accessible weekend trips from Mumbai with family, and the drive through the ghats alone is worth it when the hills are green, and the clouds sit so low you feel like you are driving into them.
For kids, Bhushi Dam during the monsoon is pure joy, though go early before it gets crowded. Tiger Point and Lion’s Point offer panoramic Sahyadri views that even teenagers will admit are impressive. Della Adventure Park is a full-day activity stop if your kids run on adrenaline. And of course, no Lonavala trip is complete without stopping at one of the chikki shops on the main road. We never make it back without three boxes minimum.
Best time to visit: July to February. Distance from Mumbai: 85 to 90 km.
Matheran: The One That Feels Like a Different World
Matheran is Asia’s only automobile-free hill station, and that alone makes it a genuinely different kind of trip. You park your car at Dasturi, and from there it is either on foot, on horseback, or on the iconic toy train from Neral. My kids talked about that toy train ride for weeks afterwards.

With over 30 viewpoints, including Panorama Point and Echo Point, and a quiet that you genuinely cannot find in Mumbai, Matheran is perfect for families who want to slow down rather than tick off an itinerary. The absence of traffic noise is something you notice immediately and deeply appreciate once you have toddlers with you.
Best time to visit: October to June. Distance from Mumbai: approximately 90 km.
Alibaug: Beach Vibes Without the Long Drive
Alibaug sits about 95 km from Mumbai by road, but if you take the ferry from Gateway of India to Mandwa, you are looking at a far more scenic and faster approach. It is one of the best weekend getaways near Mumbai for families who want a beach without the exhaustion of a long coastal drive.
Alibaug Beach and Kihim Beach are both calm and manageable with children. The Kolaba Fort, visible from the shore, adds a lovely bit of history to the trip. Local seafood, sea breezes, and space for kids to run around make this a crowd-pleaser every single time.
Best time to visit: November to March. Distance from Mumbai: 95 km by road, shorter by ferry.
Mahabaleshwar: When You Want to Go All Out
Mahabaleshwar is a slightly longer drive at around 250 km, but it rewards the effort. The hill station has a cool, pleasant climate, fresh strawberries you can pick yourself, and a relaxed pace that makes you feel like you have genuinely escaped the city. Families love the viewpoints, the horse rides, and the sheer variety of things to do without it feeling rushed.
Panchgani, just 18 km away, is another charming detour with its famous Table Land plateau, where kids can run freely. If you are planning a proper two-day getaway, Mahabaleshwar combined with Panchgani is one of the most complete family trips you can do from Mumbai.
Best time to visit: October to June. Distance from Mumbai: 250 km.
Kashid Beach: The Quieter Cousin

If Alibaug feels too crowded on certain weekends, Kashid Beach is worth the slightly longer drive. Known for its white sand, casuarina-lined shore, and relatively calm waters, it is a quieter and more relaxed option for families looking for a low-key beach escape. There is not much in the way of organised activities, which is precisely the point. A good book, some sand, and a few hours of the kids running into waves. Sometimes that is the whole plan.
Best time to visit: November to February. Distance from Mumbai: 130 km.
A Few Things I Have Learned the Hard Way
Book ahead for weekends, especially for Lonavala and Mahabaleshwar. These spots fill up quickly, and last-minute options tend to be expensive or disappointing. Leave Mumbai early, before seven in the morning if possible, because the ghats and the coastal roads can get congested by mid-morning on Saturdays. Carry cash since smaller towns and beaches often have limited card infrastructure. And pack a bag with snacks, a change of clothes for each child, and at least one toy that does not require a charger.
The best part of these trips is not always the destination. It is the chai stop on a ghat road, the kids spotting a waterfall from the car window, and the quiet that settles in the car on the way home when everyone is finally, genuinely tired.
